INTERIOR RENOVATION OF THE FULTON COUNTY CENTRAL LIBRARY Atlanta, GA
On One Margaret Mitchell Avenue stands the majestic world renowned architectural piece by Marcel Breuer, recognized architect from the Bauhaus School. The Fulton County Central Library was completed in1980. A plaza and the building glass storefront opens to the public inviting us all. Its renovation includes issues of safety, security, health and functional adaptation for technical advances as well as aesthetic revitalization of the interiors. The renovation takes place on 6 floors and includes 221,000 SF in gross area. The design incorporates existing furniture with original pieces by Marcel Breuer and LeCorbusier. The biggest design challenge was to update the look by brightening the spaces, making it a more cheerful workspace for the employees and more inviting to public, without altering the design intent of the original architect. The client wanted a coffee shop feel. The Atlanta/Fulton Public Library renovation project, in addition to the renovation of the interior finishes and study of health issues, included the solution to an ongoing water penetration problem that had rendered important spaces unusable. The water penetration problem had undergone several unsuccessful attempts of repair. We performed a thorough study of the problem that provided a clear insight and aided in the research of the necessary solution.
Project Size: 221,000 Sq. Ft.
Construction Cost: $5 M

SALCEDO PARK Dominican Republic
“Mariposa One, Mariposa Two and Mariposa Three”. These are the secret codes the three Mirabal sisters adopted for each during their struggle to free their beloved country from a brutal dictatorship during the 1960’s in the Dominican Republic. The sisters were assassinated by the dictator but their legacy lead to a free country and civil rights for all citizens.
As part of the Sister City International, Atlanta Georgia and Salcedo, Dominican Republic, joined to create a park in the hometown of the Mirabal sisters. GSB provided the park site plan design that included walking paths and landscaping. For the park centerpiece, GSB created an amphitheater with tiered seating, a brick stage, and a large, elegant Mariposa, make of poured in place concrete that covers the stage area. The shape of the concrete underneath was designed to enhance acoustics for reading and other performances. The butterfly's wings are curved upwards symbolizing her flight to freedom.
